Maria C. Martinez   Maria C. Martinez, 88, of East Bernard, Texas passed away on Tuesday evening, July 3, 2018 at her residence surrounded by loving family. She was born on January 22, 1930, in Velasco to the late Jose and Maria Hernandez Garcia.   Maria was raised in Houston and attended Houston schools. On May 5, 1946 she married Oscar P. Martinez in Houston. He preceded her in death on June 3, 2008. Maria worked as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in the Labor and Delivery ward of Hermann Hospital for many years.  Following retirement, she and Oscar lived in the East Bernard for many years. She was a member of the Wharton Garden Club, the Knitting Club of Wharton, and was a member of the Fort Bend Master Gardener club. She enjoyed working at St Thomas Resale Shop in Wharton in her spare time. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Joe Arthur Martinez, sister, Clara Lucadou and brothers, Pete Garcia, Alex Rueda, Manuel Garcia and John Hernandez.   Maria is survived by her loving children; Maria G. Valdez and husband, Juan of Brazoria, and Herlinda Buenrostro and husband, Robert of Texas City, Oscar Martinez and wife, Rose of La Marque and John E. Martinez Sr. and wife, Melissa of East Bernard, sister, Santos Sanchez of Pecos and brother, Jesse Garcia of Houston, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.   Visitation will be held Saturday, July 7, 2018 starting at 5:00 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. Celebration of her life will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2018 at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton with Michael Limas officiating.  Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.   Pallbearers will be Anthony Martinez, John Martinez, Jr., Emmanuel Martinez, Rene DelBosque, Daniel Ray Buenrostero and Joseph Puente.   Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.  Condolences may be left at whartonfuneralhome.com.
