Martha Catherine Welfel
Martha Catherine Welfel was born on March 14, 1930 to Mary Bartos Krenek and John Krenek in Wharton, Texas. She was called home to her Heavenly Father on February 27, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Welfel, and daughters Pris Ann Shimek, and Peggy Marie Welfel.
Martha married Albert Welfel and together they had three daughters, Pris, Peggy and Jane. They lived in Wharton where she worked for, and then later retired from, the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. While raising her children, she always enjoyed taking family fishing trips, gardening and being a homemaker for her family. She also was an active member of the Holy Family Catholic Church where she spent years serving on the Altar Society.
In 1980, she retired from the phone company to help welcome her first grandchild. She loved spending time with her three grandchildren and teaching them how to cook, bake and sew. She also enjoyed sharing with them her love for fishing, card games, and reading. Although she tried, they did not share her love for quilting. Martha also was a member of the Wharton Friends of the Library where she volunteered her time helping at the used book store. She also loved her Astros and spent many days and evenings cheering them on.
As much as she loved her family and grandchildren, she was even more excited when the great-grandchildren came and started to call her GG. Her face lit up every time she saw them. She looked forward to her weekly lunch dates with them and absolutely loved when her house was filled with her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane Lane of El Campo, son-in-law Bobby Shimek of Wharton, grandchildren, Amy and husband James Tabor of Wharton, Jill and husband Jason Otto of Wharton, and Keith Lane of El Campo. Survivors also include great-grandchildren, Abby & Kaitley Tabor, and Avery and Landon Otto.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Family Altar Society or you favorite charity in her memory.
Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
