Mary Ann Kubena Mary Ann Kubena, 83, of Wharton, Texas passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at a Sugar Land hospital following a sudden illness. She was born on April 25, 1935, in East Bernard, Texas to the late Robert and Frances Stavinoha Petrash. Mary Ann was raised in the Hungerford/ Wharton area and attended Wharton schools. On February 6, 1955, she married Joseph B. Kubena. Mary Ann worked as a District Manager for Sears and at Jacks Superette in Wharton for many years. She enjoyed being busy with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved fishing and traveling, especially to Louisiana to play the slots at Coushatta. She also loved her birds, especially her mourning doves and red birds. She was also a great cook, and loved gardening. Everyone loved her famous homemade jerky and peanut brittle. Mary Ann was a member of St John Catholic Church in Hungerford and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the KJZT. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Irene Jedlicka, brothers, Victor Petrash and Robert Petrash, Jr., and her son in law, Daniel Janik, Jr. Mary Ann is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Joseph B. Kubena, Sr. of Wharton, children, Mary Jo Janik of Katy, Veronica Barger and husband, Jimmy of East Bernard, “Jody” Joseph Kubena, Jr. of Wharton, Suzanne Oates and husband, Todd of Pflugerville and Kenneth Kubena and wife, Sarah of Cypress, sister, Frances Janis of Port Lavaca, grandchildren, Jennifer Laird, Lindsey Pickering, Christine Hogan, Chad Barger, Jessica Petrosky, Matthew Kubena, Kyle Kubena, Ashley Talasek, Michael Oates, Cameron “C.J.” Oates, Amber Kubena, Brandon Kubena and Jenna Kubena and 20 precious great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 2, 2018, starting at 6 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home, with a Catholic Daughters rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, September 3, 2018, at St John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Father Charles Dwomoh officiating. The rite of committal and burial will follow at St John’s Catholic Cemetery in Hungerford. Serving as pallbearers will be Chad Barger, Matthew Kubena, Kyle Kubena, Michael Oates, C. J.
