Paul Lopez
Paul Lopez, 83, of East Bernard, Texas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at his residence surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born on June 29, 1940, in Port Lavaca, to Gilbert Lopez and Irene Ortiz.
Paul was raised in Port Lavaca by his mother and his older brothers Steve, Ralph and Gilbert. He attended elementary and middle school in Port Lavaca and later when on to earn his high school GED. At 22, Paul volunteered, honorably served, and proudly fought for our country in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant serving two tours in the Vietnam Conflict. He was married to Angie Covarrubio and they shared over 48 years of marriage. As a young man, Paul worked on a Christmas tree farm and horse ranch in Montana until he enlisted in the Army. Upon returning to Texas after serving in Vietnam, he worked as a carpenter, and in various fabrication shops in the area. Later, he drove a truck for JB Hunt for many years, seeing the nation and delivering goods across the country. He enjoyed reading, spending time with family, barbecuing, going to the casino, taking care of his horses when he retired, and watching boxing and old cowboy movies on tv. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Justin Paul Lopez, and siblings, Gilbert William Lopez Sr., Ralph Lopez Sr., Steven Lopez, Charles Lopez, Dobie Lauritsen, Santos Lopez, and his grandson, Noah Asher Garcia Gonzales.
Paul is survived by his wife, Angie Lopez, his daughters: Anna Lopez, Melissa Lopez - Martinez and her husband Miguel, and Michelle Lopez-Orosco and her husband Ross, all of East Bernard. He is also survived by a daughter of the heart, Belinda Garza of Wallis. He is survived by his siblings: Gloria Cora, Roy Lopez, Linda Silvas, John Gilbert Lopez, Armando Lopez, Felix Lopez, Yolanda Ortiz, Margaret Lucatero, Mary Mayorga, Angie Lopez, Marina Lopez, Eddie Lopez, Gloria Leal, Joe Covarrubio, and numerous nieces and nephews. Paul is also survived by his grandchildren: Alyssa Villanueva, Jessie Lopez, Angelica Lopez, Lauren Diallo (Saliou), Justin Orosco (Leni), Gracelyn Martinez and Amadeo Martinez. His great-grandchildren are Isaac Villanueva, Adonis Villanueva, Leonidas Lopez, Anastasia Lopez, Oaklynn Lopez, Daleyza Jurado, Camilla Hodges, Henry Hodges, Nahla Diallo, Mariam Diallo and Safiyya Diallo.
A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 at Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton at 10 am. Burial will follow at The San Francisco Cemetery in East Bernard.
