Ramona Ramirez

Ramona Ramirez, 81, of Wharton, Texas passed away on Monday, January 14, 2019 at a Katy hospital following a brief illness.  She was born at home in Burr, Texas on February 28, 1937, a daughter of the late Candelario and Baldomera Fernandez Rivera.

Ramona was raised in the Boling area and graduated from Boling High School with the Class of 1955. She married Luis S. Ramirez on May 12, 1957, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Wharton. Ramona enjoyed working as a bookkeeper for many stores in the Wharton area, including Joe Schwartz, and S.L. Miori Co. She also worked as church secretary for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Ramona and Luis were very active in their church, being the chairman of many bazaars, fundraisers and church bingos. Ramona used her bookkeeping skills to help those less fortunate file taxes and file for government benefits. She was also very active in the Catholic Daughters of America, serving many years as Treasurer. She enjoyed going to many CDA conventions around the state. Ramona and Luis enjoyed traveling and made many trips to Mexico, Texas, California and the Southwest as family vacations. She also loved to cook and bake for family functions and just to help others in her community. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Gregoria Hernandez and brother, Tito Rivera.

Ramona is survived by her son, Henry Ramirez of Humble and daughter, Belinda Rodriguez and husband, Rudy of Katy, sister, Jane Perez and husband, Lupe of Wharton, grandchildren, Barney Buentello, Alex Ramirez, and Becky Ramirez and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

Visitation will be on Thursday, January 17 after 5pm at Wharton Funeral Home with a parish rosary recited at 7pm. The Funeral Mass and Rite of Committal will be celebrated by Father Antonio Perez on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 11 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with burial to follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Serving as pallbearers will be: Henry Ramirez, Barney Buentello, Alex Ramirez, Ramon Hernandez III, Jesse Ramirez, Jr. and Joseph Rivera.
