Tommy Ray Stewart, 67, of Columbus and formerly of Wharton passed away Saturday March 3, 2018 at Hermann Memorial Hospital with his wife Jane of 50 years by his side. He had been battling many health issues for several years and recently was diagnosed with pneumonia. He was born on October 25, 1950 in San Antonio to the late Larry and Miram Flippen Stewart and was raised in Wharton by his grandparents, Irene and Ronald Gaubetz. Tommy graduated from Wharton High School class of ’69. He went on to attend and graduate with an Associate of Arts degree in Management from Wharton County Junior College. He married Jane Hobbs in Wharton on October 27, 1968. Tommy worked for Southern Pacific Rail Road for many years before accepting a position as Conductor with Amtrak where he worked until retirement. He enjoyed fishing, classic cars and a good game of dominoes. Any encounter with Tommy was never complete without him making you laugh. He was known as a jokester with a huge library of jokes committed to memory. He enjoyed participating in BBQ cook offs and trail rides with his family and friends. He was a member of Texas Trail ride Association and Colorado River Trail riders for many years. His wife, children and grandchildren still ride the trails today! He also loved to go on motorcycle rides with Jane on his Goldwing until his health prevented him from riding. The things he cherished the most was spending time with family, his two baby girls who still called him “Daddy”, his two sons he was so proud of and his seven grandbabies. In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Andreas, father in law, Arvil Hobbs, brother in law, Gary Smith. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane Stewart of Columbus, daughters Kelly Stewart Montano and husband Kolin of Columbus, and Kacey Stewart and Fiancée David Russell of Cypress, sons Clayton Stewart and wife Ashley of Huntsville and Russell Stewart and wife Jamie of Columbus, siblings Sharon Andreas of Pearland, Susan Andreas Cutler of Deer Park and Stephen Andreas of Pasadena, mother in-law and father in-law, Joe and Lillian Wisnieski of Wharton, sister in-law, Dale Smith of West Columbia and sister in-law Doris Dornak and husband, Keith of Wharton, his seven grandchildren, Kassidy Montano, Kade and Karson Krause, Cy and Cody Stewart, Reid and Parker Stewart, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Following cremation, a Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home. Immediately following the service there will be a reception with entertainment at the Milam Street Coffee Shop hosted and owned by one of Tommy’s lifelong friends Carl King and his wife Linda, who is also officiating the service. The reception will provide time for fellowship and the opportunity to share stories of how Tommy touched our lives. Funeral services under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
