Vernon Clayton Vernon Clayton, 81, of Spring, TX, passed away on Thursday evening, December 6, 2018 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Vernon was born on December 2, 1937, in Gadsden, Alabama, to the late Willie and Lena Jean Jenkins Clayton.Vernon was raised in the Gadsden area and attended school there. He married Sharon Gauss on June 6, 1960. She preceded him in death in 2012. Vernon worked offshore most of his live. He then “Retired” to working at Wal Mart, where he enjoyed meeting new people every day, flirting with the women, and just working in general. He also loved to eat good Mexican food. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda Prothro, sisters, Sue Benefield and Polly Rice, brother, Dewey Clayton and great granddaughter, Briana.Vernon is survived by his daughter, Lawanda Prothro of Spring, son, Ricky Clayton of Texas City, grandchildren, Nicole Prothro, James Prothro, Eric Prothro, Stephanie Prothro and Candace Prothro and great grandchildren, Shyanne, Jacob, Malachi, Isiah, Haley, Kayla, Tristan and Matthew.Visitation will be held on Saturday morning, December 15 from 9 a.m. until 12 noon at the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 15 at Czech National Cemetery in East Bernard. Serving as pallbearers are Don Sebastian, Jacob Sebastian, James Prothro, Eric Prothro, Candace Prothro and Kutter Doughty. Funeral services under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
