Yvonne Welborn Johse

Yvonne Welborn Johse March 3, 1936 – October 23, 2023 Yvonne Welborn Johse, 87, of Wharton passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023, in her Wharton assisted living apartment following a brief illness. She was born on March 3, 1936, in Houston, Texas to the late Lue B. and Marguriette Frazier Welborn. Yvonne was raised in the Pasadena-Golden Acres area and graduated from Pasadena High School in 1954. She concluded her education at Mary Hardin Baylor, earned her master’s degree from University of Houston Victoria and Library Certification from Sam Houston State University. She married Lester L. Johse on October 27, 1961. Yvonne worked as a teacher and then school librarian at Sivell’s Elementary for many years. In her long education career, she taught at Newgulf Elementary, the first Head-Start class for Wharton Independent School District, GED classes through Wharton County Junior College and finally taught GED classes for female inmates at the Wharton County Jail. She loved her children, reading books, singing, playing the piano, volunteering at church, and helping with a local prison ministry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Johse, brother, L. B. Welborn Jr., and grandchild, Robby Mathews Jr. Yvonne was a beloved mother and grandmother. She will be missed by her daughters, Trisha Huffman and husband, Eric of Lake Jackson, Tessa Mathews and husband, Robby of Hungerford, Tina Rainwater and husband, Lee of Quitman and Toni Beth Johse of Fuquay Varina, NC; son, Todd Johse and Candice Wells of Houston; grandchildren, Tonya Anders and husband, Kyle, Trevor Mathews, Lara Kontos, Aryn Kontos, Sean Kontos, James Rainwater and wife, Melissa; Stephen Rainwater, Anna Rainwater, Grace Huffman, Ben Clanton and Emily Clanton; great grandchildren, Chance Bailey, Apollo Anders, Levi Anders, Brook Mathews, Emily Hummel, Noah Hummel, Elizabeth Mathews, Kayson Rainwater and Kyler Rainwater; along with nieces and nephews and many close friends. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2023, from 4 pm to 6pm at the Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 30, 2023, at 10:30 am at First Baptist Church in Wharton officiated by Reverend Tony Wishert. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
