Luis Ybarra Huerta

August 16, 1920 — December 20, 2017

Luis Huerta, Sr., 97, of Wharton passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2017. He was born on February 16, 1920 in Bay City, TX, to the late Trinidad and Pabla Ybarra Huerta. Luis was raised in the Raymondville area and attended school there. Luis married Eduvina Flores on May 11, 1942 in Raymondville. She preceded him in death on June 5, 2010. He served our country in the United States Army during WWII, earning his Honorable Discharge on November 2, 1945 after receiving three Bronze Stars for his service. After returning to Texas after his time in the service, Luis went to work for Texas Gulf Sulphur Company for many years before working Southern Pacific Railroad, and finally worked for and retired from Leedo Manufacturing in East Bernard as a cabinet maker. Luis loved to watch a good boxing match, enjoyed sweets and winning scratch off tickets. He was also known as a cookie monster to his family. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Jane Huerta-Denton. Survivors include his daughters, Betty J Huerta of Wharton, Eloisa Huerta of Wharton and Eduvina (Winnie) Huerta and husband, Vincent of Houston, sons, Luis Huerta, Jr., of Wharton, Ruben F. (Chique) Huerta of Lake Jackson and James Huerta Rodriguez of Houston, brothers and sisters, 16 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, 24 great great grandchildren and 1 great great great grandchild, and numerous other family members and friends. Visitation will be held this Friday evening, December 22 with a Prayer service held at 7 pm at Wharton Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be at 11 am Saturday, December 23, 2017 at the chapel of Wharton Funeral with Rev. Michael Limas officiating. Burial rites will be conducted under the auspices of Wharton American Legion Post 87 and VFW Post 4474 at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton, Texas. Funeral Services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at whartonfuneralhome.com.
